Traditions/customs

 I. Marriage customs:
Ejagham people see marriage as not just the agreement between a man and woman to live together as a husband and wife but as the consent of the whole community that ratifies such a union. It is a sacred phenomenon which is enacted through a ritual linked to the procreation of children for the clan, and thus requires the approval of the ancestors of the clan. Among Ejagham people for marriage to be effected it must follow culturally accepted procedures and customs. The following are the different stages of marriage phenomenon among Ejagham groups.
1.      Choosing and courting (Nsange)
2.      Declaration of intention (Obo Itim)
3.      Bethrothal (Onad)
4.      Marriage ceremony (Ebae)
